The World Press Photo

Outlet Day

Never underestimate women’s shopping ability. Coz my roommate and I spent a whoooole day in an outlet today. We went to the Designer Outlet Berlin (http://www.designer-outlet-berlin.de), where you can find over 100 international brands and 80 stores, and many of the products are half-priced.

Other than shopping, in fact it’s also nice to spend an afternoon there, to walk along the boulevards and sit at the coffee shop.

The Designer Outlet Berlin is approximately 30 minutes from the city centre (or from DeutschAkedemie). One can take an RE train then a bus to reach there. So if you are a shopaholic, never miss the place!

Das Deutsch-Französisches Volksfest

Last weekend my friend and I went to the Deutsch-Französisches Volkfest (http://www.volksfest-berlin.de/), and we had such a wonderful time there. The weather was sunny but not too hot, and the place is not crowded either.

This is the biggest folk festival in Berlin, and it is divided into 2 sections, of course the German and the French. In the German section, it’s mostly the amusement rides, Ferris wheel, roller coaster, etc. Not too modern though, and hard to relate this with Germany except the sausages sold at the kiosks. On the French side, it is more “Frenchy”, at least there is a model of the Eiffel Towel. We also watched the performances and spent a long afternoon there.

Since my friend and I would like to take a look on the night view of the park with the lights on, we waited till it goes dark. Then to our surprise, there was a firework that night. We were so happy as it was out of our expectations. They were stunning and spectacular, and gave us a perfect ending of the day.

First Impression on Germans

Just a very general impression on Germans after staying here for a month, so please forgive me if there’s anything wrong as it’s only my personal views.
Proud, Tough, Loud, Casual, Helpful, Domesticated
These are the words that come into my mind when I brainstormed Germans.
Proud, or sometimes arrogance, in terms of their own language. It’s so common that when I speak English to a German, he or she will reply me in German. I just wish I know German too.. I understand some Germans really don’t know English. But for the Government officers like those who give out residence permit or tax card, there should be at least speak a bit English or other languages to cater the non-Germans.
Tough and loud, the way they act and speak, fast, precise, strong.
Casualness is reflected on their outlook, a t-shirt and jeans, not many jewels nor makeups. On the other hand, it’s so easy to see people start a conversation with a newly-met person. Haha and I like it~
Generally Germans are helpful if you seek help. Even if you don’t ask for, there’s still people who see you in a difficult situation, e.g. carrying a 7kg backpack and at the same time pulling a 33kg luggage up the stair, they will give you both hands.
Domesticated, Germans spend a lot of their time on making their home better. The decorations, the equipment, the use of the basement, the garden, etc.  I like the way they want to make a better living. Not only monetarily, but also the real living.
Looking forward to discovering more…

Die Emails auf Deutsch

The „fast track“ to learn a language is undoubtedly to use it more often. There are tons of ways like reading the news in that language, watching Television and listening to radio and songs, reading children books… All these work well if I were a self-motivated person. But well, it always works better for me if there is a little pressure to a thing. And thus, in order to be able to communicate in German without much difficulties after a year, I choose to learn German in a language school, practise with my classmates after class, find some language partners, and even write emails in German. Apart from paying the school fee, all other ways involve another party and thus it gives me more motivation to use German.

I am so lucky that when I propose the idea of writing emails in German to my German friend, he replied me as follows (extracted from an email):

„no problem, you send your emails in German if you like (Kein Problem, du kannst deine Emails in deutsch schicken, wenn du möchtest.). Also no problem to tell you what is wrong (Es ist auch kein Problem dir zu sagen, was falsch ist.). Another idea I could write the mail in German and English (Eine andere Idee wäre, dir die Mail in deutsch und englisch zu schreiben..).“

I am so touched after I read the lines as I didn’t expect that he would write in both German and English, which would double the time he spends in writing the email. Truly thankful for his effort and I will definitely pay much more effort to learn German in every way I can!!

Last A1-2 Lesson

Last Thursday was my last lesson in level A1-2. It was actually the first month that I had classes in DeutschAkademie. A very nice experience I would say. Not only could I improve my language, it’s also a great chance to meet people from around the world. Nearly every student of my class comes from a different country, e.g. Chile, UK, Ireland, Canada, Italy, Greece, Spain, etc. So we get to know a bit about each other’s country, the local cuisine and some of the practices and cultures.

Our teacher, Tobias, is also super! He’s friendly and helpful, always introduces us with the highlight activities in Berlin. Our class all agrees that he is encouraging, keep saying „Guuuuuuut“ with a big smile after each group presents its ideas. And with the advantage of being in a class with maximum 10 students, the teacher can take care of each student’s progress and adjust the pace of teaching accordingly. We all feel so lucky to be in his class and think that he is an excellent teacher!

To add more fun to the lessons, there are many games to play which reinforce our learning. The Tic-tac-toe is definitely an unforgettable game competition. And so do the role plays, group discussions and presentations with our drawings. All these undoubtedly increase our involvement in the class and enhance our learning, and of course, bring joy and laughter for us all~

That’s all folks!

We’ve laughed, we’ve watched movies, we’ve met new people, we’ve spoke German. We made exercises, we had homework, we played games. We added new friends on Facebook, we drank coffees, we listened to music and to short fiction stories. We spent Easter, we ate chocolate. We’ve played different roles and spoke with different accents.

But as all good things come to an end, it’s time for my Deutsch Akademie class to end as well. For the second timeJ Today, as B2.1 ends, I have to admit it wasn’t bad at all. Not only that my German has improved, not only that I have more courage to speak – with mistakes, but still… – not only that I know more about Germany and German personalities, but I met really nice people and made really good friends I hope to stay in touch with. People from Japan, Macedonia, Spain, Italy, Denmark and so on. And to me, this is absolutely priceless.

Right now I am taking a break. For a month or two. And then, I’m planning to be back for B2.2.  Hopefully, for a new class filled with joy and good time. I wish you all the best with your study and, if ever interested in more info or just to chat a bit in German, send me an e-mail at luisa_leizeriuc@yahoo.com.

For now…that’s all folks!

The beautiful Land of Far Far Away

Since I moved to Berlin, everyone looks at me with a sort of unspoken sympathy when I tell them I live in Pankow. “Ooo…so far”, ”how can you make it”, “that’s the end of the world” etc etc.

Yes, I know it takes me one hour to get to Deutsch Akademie and sometimes, when I wait for the bus at 5am, I don’t have really orthodox thoughts about this neighborhood, but, on the other hand, let me tell you my dears, that Pankow is a piece of paradise.  What makes it so special? It’s quiet, green totally awesome park!

Right next to me, only two minutes by foot, lays this beautiful piece of forest, crossed by a little river where wild ducks and herons paddle. Small red squirrels run from tree to tree, fooling around. People go biking or jogging, or simply walking with kids or friends. There’s no one to say “one two three four, one two three four” when I run, no one to ruin my Zen. Now, that the spring is here, the flowers are like home and their perfume spreads and covers the park each evening like a gauze. Drops of violet and yellow flowers break the green and blue “monotony”.

Some are reading on the blankets or in improvised hammocks. Others play badminton. Everyone enjoys the sunny pleasant atmosphere.

But, here, in Pankow, the nature goes hand in hand with history. Only 300 hundred meters from the park, rises up the 17th century Schönhausen Palace, where Frederick I’s coronation as King of Prussia took place. Since 2009, after a serious restoration, the palace is open for public visits and I am sooo looking forward to visit it and find out more.

So, even if it’s a bit far from the city center, a simple walk in this area makes me feel totally refreshed. But I think everyone has a place of its own, where he/she can feel better. If so…then what’s yours?
