My first days here in Germany

It is always difficult to make a decision to move to a new country, especially if you do not speak its language. But the fear of change is something that I have never had. According to experts, travel and the study of foreign languages make a person more open-minded and tolerant. And I have to say that I totally agree with them. So I made the decision to move to Germany and before moving I had about half a year left. All preparation takes only a month, so I decided to move to South Korea for 3 months. I fell in love with this country full of bright colors. And as you know rhythm of live of each country is so unique. Probably for this reason, after moving to Munich for a long time I could not get used to a perfectly measured rhythm of  life here. Or maybe it happened because of the wrong timing. I arrived in mid-December when the sky was too gray. Sometimes I thought that I made a huge mistake and chose the wrong place. But everything has changed. Step by step I started to like this city. I fell in love with an amazing nature, beautiful streets and kind people. Locals always greet you with the smile, even if they do not know you. Finally after 3 months with the arrival of spring I fell in love with Bayern. Maybe you feel just like me, give yourself and the city some time. I promise it will not disappoint you.

How do I practice my German

As I started learning German, I started liking it. Many words and pronunciations are similar to our ancient Indian language ‘Sanskrit’. I have learned Sanskrit for 5 years during my high school so German pronunciations are little bit easy for me.

I feel that if we read something we catch many words with its correct spelling and grammar.

So as a beginner I read some children’s books and get to know about few newer words.

For speaking any language proper hearing of that language is equally important. So whenever I travel in S-bahn or bus, I listen carefully to other people’s conversation… especially school going children’s conversation in between them. This is little bit funny but I do so…and am happy that I understand it up to 80 Percent!

My son goes to German kindergarten so he speaks and understands German well. So whenever he sees cartoons, along with him I also see it and the advertisements which come in between I listen  them carefully and practice my hearing part.

If I don’t understand any word then I ask my son and he tells me the meaning. So I’ve got a little teacher at home too!

Now the important motive of my German learning is to speak German.. so here in Germany it is a good platform to practice my German speaking. So whenever I step out of home I try my level best to communicate in German.

May it be restaurant, bakery, and supermarket or with the bus drivers or old people I speak only in German. Best part is, people understand whatever I speak and always guide me properly when I need help.

This gives me immense encouragement and I study more and more with boost!

My trip to Berlin

Berlin-the capital city of Germany is in the northern part of Germany. The city itself has got the terrific history from world war two. The former city was totally destroyed during war and now which we get to see is everything rebuilt.

Last weekend, me and my family were in Berlin for 3 days.

View from TV Tower

We went to see the famous TV tower of Berlin and the view from top observatory was awesome! After that we went to nearby Alexa mall and I enjoyed shopping there. Next day we took the boat trip through the river which was fabulous.

Berliner Dom

Berliner Dom is a must visit place. Interiors of the church are so nicely carved and painted that I couldn’t take my eyes off! They are meaningful too. I climbed up the steps and went on the top to enjoy the city view from top once again.

Interior of Berliner Dom

After that we went to see Germany’s parliament. To view it from inside one has to take appointment which we didn’t know. So unfortunately we couldn’t see it from inside. From outside I saw it and the hugeness and architecture amazed me! I satisfied myself only by clicking many photos.

Germany´s Parliament

Third important sight we visited was check point Charlie and wall memorial. It was little bit sad visiting it but for history point of view I visited it.

After that to cheer up the mood we thought to have a balloon ride but again it was a windy day and balloon ride was cancelled on that day. So we moved to mall of Berlin. It is such a huge mall that I couldn’t visit 1/4th of it! So many newer brands I could see there which are still unavailable in Munich. Time passed so quickly wandering in mall. There we relished very tasty Mexican food.

It was our last day in Berlin and we had our return train on the same evening so we had to hurry up.

So most of the famous places we covered in Berlin and returned happily to Munich.

About today’s class

Even though it’s a spring time in Germany, the weather is very cold and windy these days.

Today morning it was 3 degree Celsius and everyone came to class wearing a winter jacket.

Co incidentally today’s lesson was about weather and our teacher asked us to write the words related to summer and winter. We found out the words as many as possible.

Then our teacher Anni asked everyone whether he or she likes summer or winter.

When it came to me I said I like summer in Germany as I like to go out, I like eating ice cream and days are longer in summer.

It was nice to hear about everyone’s opinion.

Then after the break we learnt about lokale Präpositionen in Akkusativ und Dativ.

For example:

In Akkusativ- Ich fahre an den see.

In Dativ- Ich bin an dem see.

After that we solved an exercise related to it and then played one game of sentence forming related to today’s grammar.

Day by day my vocabulary is increasing and my communication is also improving so am feeling happy!

Endless Stairway

Since I started writing articles for this blog, I really want to share with you some of my favorite places in Munich. But first, I decided to start with a small introduction and tell you about my passion. I like taking pictures. I really do. That is why, most of the places I will share with you are perfect for taking pictures. I promise you will get a great chance to get a great shot. So let’s come right to the point. Today, I would like to tell you about endless stairway in downtown Munich. “Umschreibung” or “rewriting” was erected in 2004 by Olafur Eliasson – a Danish-Icelandic artist. For me it is one of the most unique places in the city. Every time I come there I wonder how the author got the idea to design something like this.

What comes to your mind when you look at it? What kind of message does the author mean to bring us? For me it is definitely a sign to stop and think about my life and my goals. We can spend an entire life chasing something and notice nothing else. Probably because we do not follow our heart. As a result, our life turns into a routine. We are stuck in a rut and life looks like this endless stairway. Maybe it is right time to take a break and enjoy the moment, time to take care of yourself.

Oktoberfest

Bavaria and Oktoberfest has a unique connection!

Right from the 18th century from the time of marriage ceremony of King Ludwig, it is celebrated in Munich. It’s a 3 weeks long festival starting from mid of September to first week of October.

To witness this grand fest, thousands of people from all over the world come to Munich.

Ladies wearing dirndl and gents wearing lederhose (leather pants and checks shirt) is the Hallmark of Octoberfest!

I had been to Oktoberfest in 2017.At the entrance security was tight and all the emergency services were ready. This was essential because festival ground was literally flooded with people.

People were enjoying in groups. There were so many tents and beer was served in the tent along with chicken or wurst. People were relishing their food and drinks with lots of laughter and talks!

I too enjoyed a Brezel bread and ginger bread.

There were so many rides and games for children and a child in me enjoyed that too!

So I understood why every Bavarian eagerly waits for Oktoberfest every year.

It’s nothing but the relaxation and get together with friends just before the winter starts.

So after reading this, am sure those who haven’t been to Oktoberfest yet, will definitely attend it this year!

How do you learn foreign languages?

At the end of this blog, I would like to summarize information about the study of foreign languages in general.

So, we found out that attending good foreign language schools is a good idea. Of course, there is a reference to Deutsch Akademie. This is a good place ^_–. However, how else in this world do people learn foreign languages?

There are three most typical things you can hear. Watch movies on this language, listen to music and read books. Yes, it is useful, but this is not enough.

You can install the application on your phone, but as quickly as you installed it, you will forget about it just as quickly. The first is a simple rule, you need a lot of hard work by yourself. Learn more words than you need for your language level. For example, if you A 1 learn all the words for A 2 and so on. However, take your time with the grammar, stretch the enjoyment ^-^.

Now is the most difficult part. To speak quickly and well in another language, you need to get into this language environment. This does not mean that you simply live in Germany. Every day you have to talk with native speakers in work or study areas. After at least three months, you speak freely enough and then you will only reduce the number of errors. This is a proven path.

I wish you good luck with learning German and creating new ways to learn it well!

A few thoughts about the difference in languages

Which languages are the most difficult? Many people believe that this is Chinese. Russian language is also considered difficult. I think Finnish is one of the most difficult.

What is important for those who are connected with Germany?

German is often compared with English, not because it’s very similar, but because these are the languages you need in Germany. Well then.

I find German more difficult. Although of course, I was learning English for more than 10 years. Even my master’s thesis was in English. I started learning German relatively recently. Anyway, grammar looks more impressive.

There are also many similarities with the Russian language.  However, there is one problem. There are identical features, but still, there is nothing absolutely identical. Therefore, it is often even more difficult in this way. You allow yourself to relax a little, “this is how we have it,” and then you will surely make a mistake, but you will find it latest.

There is also a separate funny topic about the same words but with a different meaning. For example “der Fluss” in German, it’s a flow. “Флюс” (*Flus) in Russian, this is a terrible abscess in your mouth when a tooth is sore.

I can think about that for a long time. But still, it is much easier when languages have common features.
