Living in Munich

While living here in Munich naturally I noticed some weird thing in the city which are very characteristic and unusual for me. For example, it was very difficult to get used to the bicycle roads, the first weeks I couldn’t understand why these bicycle riders were so angry at me :) Another thing I can’t put up with here is the traffic lights – they are so long! And people, mostly Germans, wait until there is a green light and then cross the road, even though there are no cars in the road. For me it is weird, although I know that this is the right thing to do. That is why I prefer walking in the area of Marienplatz – there are almost no traffic lights :)

During our classes we often have very interesting exercises, the most interesting ones are those that are based on games! Yesterday we played a strange game about ducks. The game looked like that:

Eine Ente – mit zwei Beinen – springt ins Wasser – plumps

Each person says one phrase. When the whole sentence is finished, starts another one, but altered like that:

Zwei Enten – mit vier Beinen – springen ins Wasser – plumps – plumps

the difficulty is to count how many people should say plumps! When the game is very fast, it’s almost impossible to count :)

This is me and my friend during the pub crawling – another fun event in munich, where you can visit lots of bars and clubs in one night :)

One of my favourite places in Munich to go out with fiends at night is the bar called Kennedy’s, that is located just near the Sendlinger Tor station. It’s always full of people of different ages and nationalities and it’s fun to hang out there. They also have a good menu, so that no one can starve there :) But the epic moment of the bar is during football matches, then it is really overcrowded and you have to get there 4-5 hours before to find a place to sit or to stand :)

That’s me and my argentinian friend :)

Well, it’s time to say how my German is making progress. Before this course I could hardly order a coffee in a restaurant, but now I feel that I can speak freely, with plenty of mistakes of course, but I’m still learning!
One of very useful topics I’ve learned so far is Relativsatz, it’s very helpful in explaining yourself while having a simple talk with friends. It also helps in building shorter sentences. For example instead of saying “Das ist ein Kuchen. Meine Mutter macht den Kuchen aus Mehl, Ei, Zucker usw.” you can say it shorter: “Das ist ein Kuchen, den meine Mutter aus Mehl, Ei und Zucker macht”. Cool, isn’t it??

aaand that’s me in my favourite Residenz!

I suppose for most of the people one of the best places in Munich would be Englischer Garten, or Marienplatz, but for me it is Residenz. I have never ever seen such a beautiful building in my life! I have already been there 2 times and I suppose I will return to this place very soon, because each room there is very different and inspiring and it’s great to learn about the royal life through the real thing, not through just books (although it is very important too!).

One of the best room in my opinion is the Antiquarium. It is very impressive and people need to spend a lot time there in order to look at each sculpture and admire it!

In the previous post I told you about the service with audio-books, where you can try the first book for free and then choose any for a god price.

Now i would like to tell you about another good thing you can find in the web site of Deutsch Akademie – little exercises to check your knowledge. You can choose the exercises according to your level, or according to the book you are having lessons on. Moreover you can choose the number of questions and the number of unit as well. After you can compete with other users – students who answer the most of the questions appear in the rating! I find it cool and very motivating to learn more and more :)

Before taking the course at Deutsch Akademie I was researching a lot about this school and in the web-site i found very interesting materials such as exercises for different levels, and audiobooks. I listened to the preparatory audio book and after that i made my mind to take the course in DA. I enjoyed reading the story about Philip not because of the plot itself, but of the way that the new info was given. It was easy for me to understand the new grammars because there were good explanations in English. And it is also good to have a transcription of the text you hear.

Life in Munich is very calm and exciting at the same time. Munich is considered to be one of the safest city, that is why no one here is scared to walk alone during evenings. As for me, in my free time I prefer going outside for a walk or draw somewhere in the Enlischer Garten or near Isar river. It is very relaxing and it’s great to admire the stunning view of German nature. While drawing I always notice what other people are doing during their leisure time. In most cases they go jogging or drink beers with a nice company in the fresh air ;)

As i have already told, the people from my group come from very different countries: Spain, India, Bulgaria, Poland, Ukraine, Brazil, Japan. That is why it is always interesting to listen to the stories about special cultural things and backgrounds during the lesson, in German of course ;) Some of my colleagues are students in Munich or starting their career with an internship. Some people are in the process of finding a new job in a new country, and some of them are already working. AMong my colleagues there are very different professions: from the chef in a restaurant to an electronic engineer! It is especially great to broaden your outlook.
